Yoga workshop in Scotland,
with Sophy Hoare

Undo Tension – Free the Spine
7pm Thursday 10 - 3pm Sunday 13 May

In this course the aim will be to help students discover a way of practising that leads them towards wholeness and freedom of movement; wholeness because the whole body becomes involved in every movement, and freedom because when the body moves in an integrated way, it experiences no block or limit and no part of the body is put under stress. In this natural and animal-like way of moving, we actively release tension and unblock the deep, alive movement of the spine.

Yoga teacher Sophy Hoare

Problem areas are not focused on directly but allowed to find their place in the context of the whole so that they free themselves spontaneously.
I hope to demonstrate that there is no 'method', but a basic principle of working and paying attention, which is the same in all the postures and is a key to practice.
This shall be done by showing students how I practice, by observing their movements closely to find the best way of helping them, by explaining some principles, by using language to help them train their attention, and wherever possible by giving individual help through touch.

Questions and dialogue are encouraged, I come to the course with no pre-arranged plan but rather respond to what I see in the students' practice.

The course is most suitable for people who have an established personal practice, but less experienced students are welcome if they bear in mind that it is not aimed primarily at beginners.

Sophy has been teaching yoga for 30 years and is based in south London where she runs regular classes and courses and teaches private lessons. She also teaches on workshops and residential retreats throughout the British Isles and abroad. Originally Sophy practised and taught Iyengar yoga. Later she met Vanda Scaravelli, who invited her to Italy to be her student. Sophy continued to visit her once or twice a year for eight years until her death. During this period she met Diane Long, a long-term student of Vanda's, whom she invited to London to teach both herself and her students. This led to a fruitful collaboration between them and they continue to practice and teach together whenever they can. It is from Diane that she learned to understand Vanda's teaching profoundly enough for it to gradually become her own 'inner teacher'.

Cost: £250 (£225 if booked before 28 January) deposit £100 (non-refundable).
