A week of Yoga, with Gary Carter
7pm Wednesday 18 – 4pm Sunday 22 July

In this course the aim will be to help students discover a way of practising that leads them towards wholeness and freedom of movement; wholeness because the whole body becomes involved in every movement, and freedom because when the body moves in an integrated way, it experiences no block or limit and no part of the body is put under stress. In this natural and animal-like way of moving, we actively release tension and unblock the deep, alive movement of the spine.

In this week-long course with Gary, we will be exploring the Yoga practice from a structural perspective whilst looking at how form and function intertwine with each other; exploring what really creates the sense of lightness within practice and movement; how we can start to create the conditions for freedom within the practice.

Yoga with Gary Carter

We will explore our response to gravity and how it informs our practice deeply, being the “prime mover” so that the tension becomes our teacher!

From all this understanding and wider approach can we evolve the practice?
We will be exploring Anatomy, Structure, Form and Function.

Gary has an extensive history of over 25 years’ experience in movement, physical training, anatomical study and bodywork practices. His background incorporates athletics, competitive cycling, bodybuilding, martial arts and yoga along with the manual therapies of cranio-sacral therapy, shiatsu and structural integration. From this diverse background Gary has created his own unique way of working with the body that he incorporates into both his practical and theoretical lectures.

In 1990, Gary set up the Natural Bodies Centre in Brighton to provide a range of related movement and manual disciplines where he could teach, train and encourage others to develop kinesthetic awareness, ease of movement and efficient body use in exercise and sport. He continues to develop and evolve his understanding of balance, integration and functional movement by working with other anatomists in the USA and Europe and with movement teachers from the fields of dance, contact improvisation, Tai Chi, Pilates, Gyrotonics and martial arts. He has studied extensively and taught with Tom Myers in Anatomy Trains and Structural Integration.

Yoga teacher Diane Long

He was introduced to the Yoga of Vanda Scaravelli in 1988 and subsequently explored the work through various teachers until he eventually met Vanda and continued the work under the influence of Diane Long and continues to work with Diane to this day.
